Who's it for?

Accredited by the FHT and STO - Advanced Training, 5 credits.

Anyone qualified, or about to qualify in massage or sports massage , sports rehabilitation, sports therapy, physiotherapy, chiropractic or osteopathy, looking to refresh and re-enforce their skills or learn new ones.

Level I
is for anyone who is new to the technique
is useful as a refresher for therapists who have learnt the technique and are unsure about it or who feel a little rusty
is useful as a means of revising muscles and their actions for students or therapists needing support in this area
involves use of the technique in such a way that it is most easy to apply

Level II
is for anyone who has done a Level I workshop in the technique
involves use of the technique in ways that are slightly more difficult to apply than on the Level I workshop
encourages more experimentation with the technique and explores in more detail when and how the technique may be applied and for which clients it may therefore be most suitable

STR is a recognised National Occupational Standard (NOS) for sports therapy as set out by Skills Active. (D522)

Attendees receive a comprehensive workbook and certificate of attendance and are informally assessed to ensure competency.

With Jane Johnson, Chartered Physiotherapist, author of -

Oct 2008

Soft Tissue Release: Hands-on Guides for Therapists, learn to apply STR to all the major muscles of the body through clothing and incorporate this valuable technique into your treatments. Practice applying STR using your forearms, fists and elbows safely identify which techniques and postures work best for you and your client.

Muscles often contain specific areas of tightness, perhaps due to fibrotic changes or to scar tissue, and massage alone does not always address these adequately. Soft Tissue Release (STR) is a deep tissue technique commonly used by sports masseurs to encourage tight fibres to stretch. (Situations in which passive STR can help)

"I just wanted to say a big "Thank-You" for last week's STR course. I thought that it was probably the best taught course I've been on." Richard

"I really enjoyed the STRworkshop, it was fab! Jane is a great tutor. I've been using STR for a while now in my practice but Jane showed me some brilliant new techniques and helped me to recognise some bad habits that i'd gotten into so the workshop was of huge benefit to me, thank you so much " Sam

“Thanks for a great day on Sat.  Found the course really beneficial for refreshing my skills and getting the confidence to work on other muscle groups I tended to avoid. It was great to have a teacher that was always gave positive feedback with no negative criticism!  Makes a huge difference! I went home buzzing (normally really tired after a course!)” Clare
